?The Art of Video Games,? one of the first major exhibits to explore the 40-year evolution of video games as an artistic medium, will open March 16 at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.?

On display until Sept. 30, the exhibit features 80 video games, selected with the help of the public, which was asked by the Smithsonian early last year to choose their favorites from a pool of 240; games were selected for their graphic excellence, artistic intent and innovative design. Presented in the exhibit through still images and video footage, the 80 selected games demonstrate the evolution of the video game medium.

There will also be five featured games, one from each gaming era, that will be available in exhibition galleries for visitors to play; these are "Pac-Man," "Super Mario Brothers," "The Secret of Monkey Island," "Myst" and "Flower." They were chosen, the museum said, because they demonstrate how players interact with virtual worlds; they also display what were innovative, new techniques when they were developed, setting the standard for later games.

Also featured are 12-foot-high projections of excerpts from games, accompanied by a chipmusic soundtrack recorded by 8 Bit Weapon specifically for the exhibit; videos that depict the range of emotional responses players have while interacting with games; and excerpts from interviews with 20 influential figures in the gaming world.

Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC

Shadow of the Colossus, 2005, Fumito Ueda, director and game design, Sony Playstation 2.

Chris Melissinos, former chief gaming officer for Sun Microsystems and guest curator of the exhibit, said it ?illuminates the importance of games in our society, for those of us who grew up with them. For the first time in our history, we have gamers raising gamers. This is storytelling and an artistic medium for the 21st?century.?

Of the games in the exhibit, Melissinos said one of his favorites is "Shadow of the Colossus," while he said his ?all-time favorite? is "Robotron:? 2084," which is not in the exhibit, and which he called ?perhaps one of the greatest arcade games ever made. It provides a real moral conflict for the player.?

Curvin J. Huber, an assistant professor of game design at Becker College in Worcester, Mass., said he hoped the exhibit would make the ?general public aware that video games are an art form the same as a painting on the wall, or experimental film.?

Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC

Flower TM, 2009, Jenova Chen, creative director; John Edwards, lead engineer. Developed by thatgamecompany, LLC, Playstation 3.

Tracy Fullerton, an associate professor in the interactive media division of the USC School of Cinematic Arts ? whose graduates created two of the 80 games in the exhibit, "flOw" and "Flower" ? said that although no one exhibit ?could cover everyone?s favorite games, they did a great job of covering the spectrum.? ? ? ? ? ?

?One of the wonderful qualities of the Smithsonian is that it celebrates American art and artifacts in all variations. It?s great to see video games included in that,? she added.

The exhibit will open Friday with a three-day ?GameFest.? This will include panel discussions on the past and future of video game design; a keynote address by Nolan Bushnell, founder of Atari; screenings of ?TRON? and the documentary,?The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters?; and live-action games with costumed characters. There will also be a symposium May 4 that will examine the changing roles of video games in fields ranging from health care and education to journalism and national defense.

The exhibit will travel to 10 other U.S. cities from October 2012 through January 2016; confirmed venues can be found on the exhibit?s Web site. ? ??

Project

The management of Health, Safety, Welfare and Environmental issue; after the move into the converted factory at a new location.

Chapter 1
Introduction

The purpose of the project is to create a management structure for the Management of Health, Safety, Welfare and Environmental issues within a refurbished, converted factory.

The Factory work force and contents were moved several miles to the new location in a converted building which was designed to accommodate the requirements of the production of end user products, including the administration block and welfare facilities were also provided.

The infrastructure was also considered such as the provision of Gas, Water Electricity Telephone links, Drainage waste management areas, access and egress of the delivery of goods and materials.
Taking into consideration flow patterns of vehicles and external storage of large items into an undercover area proved to be very important when it came to the management of large carcases used in the production of the end user product.

After taking occupancy and setting out the areas required for the work flow from the installation of the plant and equipment to the despatch of finished goods the need to streamline and fine tune the rest of the production process was to be expected.
Along with this came the need to manage the inclusion of the Health and Safety programme and the setting up of an environmental procedure which would encompass all the needs from within the factory and all external requirements for compliance with the current environmental legislation.
The additional requirement of incorporating a Welfare system for the management of the Safety Spectacles, Coveralls and ? Safety Footwear not to mention toilets, showers, wash facilities and changing rooms?

Looking For Your Next Home Improvement Project - The Furniture ...

People have their own reasons for feeling good about doing various home improvement projects. Some projects will improve the standards by which you and your family live. When you participate in environmental projects known as green projects you?re working to improve the planet. Many of these projects serve you (by reducing energy costs) just as well as they serve the planet. The most compelling thing about these projects though has to be the power tools and all the fun you?ll have using them. So it really can be a total win situation all around for some of us.

If you?re looking for an investment with an excellent return and plan to stay in your home a little while then double pane windows are definitely the way to go. Consider where you?re living though before you invest in this particular project. These windows are good choices in hot weather climates, cold weather climates, and climates that experience both extremes. These windows provide excellent insulation from weather extremes and sound alike. With varying distances it?s possible to purchase double pane windows anywhere from one inch of space between the panes down to a quarter of an inch of space. Argon, an inert gas, is usually used to fill this space. The amount of data and information regarding microwave omelet maker can be a bit intimidating if you have not read so much about it, yet. If you think this is all there is, then you are in for a real treat when you see what else we have written on the matter.

This is all we ask of anyone, really, to view this with a receptive mind and go farther with it. That is why it is so imperative that you really dissect what you are reading here; your awareness will be the better for it. We all want to have as much control as possible, even though we know we cannot control everything, but still ? knowledge lets you be in a position to respond better to events. If the doors in your home are older, then they might not be as energy efficient as they should be. Due to the fact that they have an energy efficiency rating that has been given to them, you should choose newer doors for your home. One of the most important things that you should consider involve making sure that the frame has the right seal. You can also buy additional sealant aids such as magnetic weather stripping and bottom expanders to make certain that all sealed surfaces are airtight. You can make it even more airtight by utilizing bottom sweeps which tends to be manufactured from vinyl.

One place in particular tends to be left rough and unfinished in many homes, can you guess which part? This is an easy question, with the answer being the basement. This project can be one of the most exciting as you?ll end up with an additional room for relaxing in. When remodeling the basement you don?t have to fully complete it, which is why it?s quite an attractive project. It is out of the way, and you can work on it when funds are available. Not only will you have a room that?s out of the way, cool and relaxing, you?ll also add to the resale value of your house.

Since there are things that have to be taken care of to properly maintain a home, many home improvements cannot be considered enjoyable. We have discovered that it is simple to create a schedule of the inspections that must be done annually and monthly. This makes things a lot easier to get done.

You have read through this article and have a better appreciation about beautyrest electric blanket, hopefully. However the situation does not always remain predictable, and it is usually not so easy to see where things are going. It only stands to reason that anything unknown can introduce the unexpected. So it is definitely in your best interest to implement further attempts to broaden your knowledge. But as you well know, the internet is so huge that you can do that with no problems. Be sure you only take solid information from trusted sources on the net because we all know how it is. After all this much time has passed, we all know what things are like on the web.

Pi master?s storied recall

World-record holder grabbed decimal tiger by the tale

Web edition : Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

As the March 14 celebration of Pi Day approaches, toast a man who figured out how to have his pi and recite it, too ? beyond 60,000 decimals. All it took was intensive practice and a knack for storytelling, a new study finds.

A Chinese man who set a world?s record in 2005 by reciting 67,890 decimals of pi learned to associate number pairs with images of people and objects, scientists report in the June Cognitive Psychology. From those images, 23-year-old Chao Lu concocted stories that corresponded to blocks of 500 to 1,000 numbers, say Yi Hu of East China Normal University in Shanghai and K. Anders Ericsson of Florida State University in Tallahassee.

As Chao Lu delivered a heaping slice of pi to Guinness judges for 24 hours and four minutes, a tale containing more than 60 chapters ran through his head. ?That?s up there with the Bible,? Ericsson says.

Several thousand hours of practice over seven years with an efficient memory strategy enabled Chao Lu?s achievement, says psychologist Elizabeth Valentine of Royal Holloway University of London. No special mental or memory abilities were required, in her view, although scientists disagree about the extent to which practice makes perfect (SN: 7/17/10, p. 10).

Ericsson agrees that practice and strategy were key. In a 2009 paper, he and his colleagues reported that Chao Lu had an average memory for rapidly presented number sequences. When allowed to study number lists, the pi champ converted digit pairs into words or images that he wove into stories. The previous record holder described the same strategy to Japanese researchers.

In the new investigation, Hu and Ericsson asked the pi master to describe aloud his thinking process as he memorized 100- and 300-digit lists. His recall immediately afterward ranged from 95 percent to 100 percent accurate.

Chao Lu described generating mental images for number pairs from 00 to 99, such as classroom for 94 and stones for 17. From these cues he created stories.

For lists of 15 to 75 numbers, Chao Lu reported constructing five-image stories. Fourth and fifth images took him longer to study than preceding images did, consistent with having to integrate later images into a pre-existing story line. Chao Lu took longest to retrieve initial images, which cued recall of later images.

Given 50-digit lists with repeating number pairs that interfered with his story strategy, Chao Lu used alternative tactics. His recall remained impressive.

In interviews, the ultimate pi guy said that different stories containing common image sequences became confusing once he surpassed 10,000 decimals of pi. At that point, he generated images for combinations of digit pairs. The second pair in a sequence was treated as primary. So 1514 became a key (14) shaped like a parrot (15), whereas 1415 became a parrot with a key in its mouth.

Chao Lu?s memory feat was as short-lived as it was fantastic. Five years after his pi-rotechnics, he could recall only 39 decimals for the researchers.
