Songkick?s Tourbox Makes It Easier For Musicians To Trumpet Their Concerts Across The Web

I'm not a professional musician, but apparently it's a headache for artists to publicize their tourdates on the myriad number of websites and apps that cater to music lovers. Not only is there Facebook and Twitter, but there's YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud and Hype Machine. Enter Songkick, a concert promotion startup that's backed by Sequoia Capital and Index Ventures. They have tons of those little widgets across the web that show when your favorite band is in town. Now they're trying to make it easier for musicians to manage promotions themselves. They've built a product called Tourbox, which connects to a musician's Facebook fan page and automates the publishing for concert dates across the web and in sites like YouTube, Tumblr, Vevo and Spotify. The company counts M83 and Of Montreal among Tourbox's users so far.

Changing Behavior: An Interview with Dr. Georgianna Donadio

For over 30 years,?Dr.?Georgianna?Donadio?has been a pioneer in the field of behavioral health, working with healthcare professionals and patients to change? behaviors that lead to improved health. Her pioneering work is the foundation for the newly published book?Changing Behavior: Immediately Transform Your Relationships with Easy-to-Learn, Proven Communication Skills.?The book was the winner of the 2012 Indie Book Awards (Relationships) and is highly rated on Amazon (67 five stars reviews at the time of publishing this).?Today I?m very happy to feature an interview I recently did with Dr. Donadio regarding her book.

1. What led you to write this book?

A very commonplace motive ? I grew up in a significantly dysfunctional family that had very poor communication skills. It was a painful experience that did not prepare me to create successful or fulfilling relationships. Subsequently, I had a strong desire to know how healthy relationships worked and what I needed to know to create them.

For years I avoided writing about the subject as my focus was on the vast amount of work and synthesis required to solidify the research and the outcomes into a cohesive model. This was important so that anyone could understand and apply the skills in their communications with others. At this time, there is so much anxiety in our culture, and so much relational disconnection because of technology, that it became clear it was time to put the information out there for those seeking solutions for better communication skills.

2. Why is your book different from the hundreds of books on the market devoted to helping people improve their relationships?

This book does not attempt to ?advise? or ?instruct? people in how to make relationships turn out the way they may want them to or to even make them ?wonderful?- or for readers to achieve their goals in their relationships. It invites the reader to understand the following:

• Why we all behave as we do.
• What needs to take place in relationship to ourselves and others to trust and welcome the process of change.
• What are relational behaviors that are proven to transform suffering or struggling (or even ordinary relationships) into relationships that are thriving and extraordinary.

This book is the first step by step process (you don?t need therapy or to get over your issues to do this) that guarantees your experience, as well as the other person?s personal experience of communicating, will become enhanced and transformed.A s a result of the choice to follow these easy to learn, proven communication skills you will experience greater control over yourself, your life, and your relationships.

3. Change can be difficult, especially for people who have behaved or communicated in a certain way for years. How does the behavioral change model described in your book make change achievable?

If someone wanted to become a great French chef they would have to (1) have the motivation to learn (2) be willing to consistently apply the steps to achieve their goal. This is no different. It doesn?t matter how we have behaved previously. This step by step method deals with how we choose to be with another person in this moment and not how we may have been with them or others in the past. These steps shift both the intention and the outcome of the interactions.

4. What is something people may be surprised to learn about changing behavior?

You can make the decision to change your behavior in an instant. For most of us it is about the pain/pleasure balance. When our discomfort or pain either within a relationship or being without relationships becomes too great, and out weights the pleasure of ?the known? way we have behaved previously, we can and usually do commit to learning and applying skills and tools to make changes. Most change is temporary unless there is an emotional shifting that occurs. That emotional shifting is dramatically facilitated by the Pure Presence model.

Xperia Arc, Neo ICS updates now rolling out

As promised, Sony Ericsson has started launched Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich updates for the remaining members of its 2011 Xperia family. Today the Xperia Arc and Xperia Neo get their updates straight to the latest version of Android -- 4.0.4. The update also introduces a few software enhancements found in Sony's UXP NXT UI, which you may remember from 2012 Xperias including the Xperia S. China and Japan to begin direct currency trading

China and Japan plan to launch direct trading of the yen and the yuan as early as June, a step that could promote the two counties' trade and financial transactions and push forward yuan internationalization, analysts said yesterday.

Several banks of the two countries, including Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ and Bank of China, will start the direct trading in Tokyo and Shanghai, and set exchange rates themselves, the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun reported over the weekend.

People's Bank of China could not be reached for comment on weekend.

The step follows an agreement between the two countries signed in December 2011, when Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda visited China, to push for trading of the currencies.

The yen will become the first major foreign currency besides the US dollar that can be traded directly with the yuan.

"Rising bilateral trade volume would be the driving force for the move," Zhang Yongjun, deputy director-general of the Research Department at the China Center for International Economics Exchange, a Beijing-based government think tank, told the Global Times yesterday.

The two countries' total trade volume last year amounted to 27.54 trillion yen ($358 billion), up 3.9 percent from the previous year, according to Japan's Ministry of Finance.

Top leaders of China, Japan and South Korea reached an agreement during a summit this month to begin free-trade negotiations later this year, amid an expected drop in transactions with key markets like the US and Europe.

Direct trading between the two currencies could lower financial risks caused by fluctuations in the dollar, as well as reducing trade transaction costs, the Japanese media reported.

Currently, trading of the two countries' currencies can only be completed via the interim step of being exchanged into dollars.

The commission charge for this that must be paid to the US Federal Reserve Board every year is estimated to be around $3 billion.

"It is a necessary step for yuan internationalization," Guo Tianyong, director of the Research Center of China Banking at the Beijing-based Central University of Finance and Economics, told the Global Times yesterday.

The People's Bank of China said in December 2011 that it would not only promote cross-border transactions between the yuan and the yen, but also support Japanese companies to issue renminbi bonds in Tokyo and other overseas markets.

BOSTON (AP) - The clubhouse door opened up and the Tampa Bay Rays could be seen dancing - a stark contrast to what happened a night earlier.

Sean Rodriguez hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning off Boston closer Alfredo Aceves, and the Rays rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Red Sox on Sunday afternoon, a day after losing in the final inning.

"We're a lot of fun when we win," Rays manager Joe Maddon said, smiling at the thought of his team's postgame celebration.

When the door opened, an elder male fan came out of the Rays' clubhouse and was putting his Red Sox shirt back on, telling people he was invited in to celebrate with the Rays.

"Something like that," Rodriguez said, breaking into a smile when asked about his team's `dance party' after the victory. "Every team wants to win. We just want to remember how much fun it is."

Will Rhymes went 3 for 3 with three singles and an RBI for the Rays, who lost Saturday night on a pinch-hit, two-run homer by Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the ninth off closer Fernando Rodney.

Clay Buchholz had his best start of the season and Adrian Gonzalez hit a three-run homer for Boston, which was about to move above .500 for the first time this season until Rodriguez hit a drive off Aceves (0-2) over the Green Monster with one out after Ben Zobrist walked.

"We know exactly how they feel after last night," Maddon said. "It's not a good feeling."

It's the latest the Red Sox (23-24) haven't been over .500 since late August of 1996.

Aceves failed for just the third time in 14 chances.

"His control has been pinpoint, those pitches were just a little off," Boston manager Bobby Valentine said.

Buchholz, who entered with a major league-high 7.84 ERA, scattered eight hits and allowed two runs over seven innings, walking one and striking out six in matching his season high with 111 pitches.

"Nobody likes losing, but you've got to deal with it sometimes," Buchholz said. "It's a tough loss."

The Red Sox had given Buchholz a major league-best 8.76 runs in his starts, but they were unable to put together any sustained offense against Jeremy Hellickson until rallying in the seventh.

Trailing 2-0, David Ortiz drew a leadoff walk and Kevin Youkilis singled before Gonzalez lofted a fly ball down the left-field line that hooked into the first row of Green Monster seats just inside the pole.

Hellickson gave up three runs, seven hits, walked two and struck out three over 7 2-3 innings.

Gonzalez had a chance to break it open, but failed in the eighth.

"It's not devastating. It's tough, but it's not devastating," he said of the loss. "We'll come out tomorrow and try to win a game."

The Rays broke up a scoreless game with a run in the fourth. Matt Joyce had a one-out double and advanced on the play when right fielder Gonzalez's throw missed the cutoff, hitting off the top of Dustin Pedroia's lunging attempt in short right and rolling about 20 feet away. Zobrist then bounced to first, scoring Joyce.

Gonzalez played right for just the second time in Fenway Park due to a number of injuries to Boston's outfield.

The benches cleared Friday when Boston reliever Franklin Morales threw behind Luke Scott before hitting him in the right leg.

Rhymes' two-out RBI single made it 2-0 in the seventh after Rodriguez reached on a double, barely beating Pedroia's tag with a headfirst slide.

Hellickson, who had his worst start of the season against the Red Sox in Fenway on April 14, allowed just four singles in the first six innings and only one runner to second base. That came when Scott Podsednik reached with one out in the third and advanced on a ground out, but Pedroia ended the inning with a fly out.

Hellickson gave up five runs in five innings in Boston's second home game of the season in April.

B.J. Upton extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single, matching his career best.

Buchholz had double plays turned behind him to end the fifth and sixth.

Rev. Mel White: President Obama Says 'No' to Holy Terrorism

When President Obama announced his support for same-sex marriage, he gave our nation a far greater gift than marriage equality for millions of gay and lesbian couples. He spent a lot of time "evolving" on the issue, but in the end the President showed us that he would not give way to terrorists, even those "holy terrorists" on the Christian right who threatened God's wrath upon this nation if gays and lesbians were given the rights and protections of marriage.

Fundamentalists, whether Christian, Muslim, or Jew, use violence or the threat of violence to intimidate and coerce, especially for political purposes. Christian terrorists may not strap on bombs or toss hand grenades or spray a sidewalk caf? with automatic weapons. Instead, they promise that their God will do the dirty work for them.

We should not be surprised that holy terrorists use the threat of God's wrath to accomplish their political goals when they use the threat of God's wrath to intimidate or coerce their own children. In spite of all the psychological, scientific, historic, and even biblical evidence to the contrary, Christian pastors, priests, and parents still warn their lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender children that God doesn't love them as they are and that if they accept their sexual orientation as good, right, and blessed, God will abandon them to hell.

Playing the "wrath of God" card is not new to American politics. Recent surveys make it clear that the Tea Party movement is simply the old Christian right in disguise. More than half the Tea Party members surveyed believe that the Bible is the literal word of God, that America is a Christian nation, and that public officials should pay more attention to (the Christian) religion. Sixty-three percent believe that abortion should not be legal. Eighty-two percent oppose same-sex marriage. I do not hate my sisters and brothers on the Christian right, but I do fear their growing political power.

Republican candidates for president tripped all over themselves trying to win the hearts and minds of the new/old Christian right. Governor Romney continues to pander and placate. It is no longer just "the economy, stupid." In this election year, democracy is still threatened by theocracy. The Constitution is still threatened by biblical law. And holy terrorists are still using the threat of God's wrath to superimpose their beliefs on the rest of us. Gay Americans should celebrate all the advances being made toward full equality, but we must not forget that the civil and religious rights we have gained are easily reversed if the holy terrorists have their way.

According to the Baltimore Sun, at a hearing on Maryland's proposed constitutional amendment to prohibit gay marriage, Jamie Raskin, professor of law at American University, was requested to testify. At the end of his testimony, Republican senator Nancy Jacobs said, "As I read Biblical principles, marriage was intended, ordained, and started by God. That is my belief." Raskin replied, "People place their hand on the Bible and swear to uphold the Constitution; they don't put their hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible," eliciting applause from some people in the room.

Unfortunately, too many Americans are not applauding. The Tea Party mentality supports Senator Jacobs when she suggests that the "laws of God" are the ultimate authority over laws and protections based on the U.S. Constitution. The campaign to amend the North Carolina State Constitution was led almost entirely by holy terrorists misusing the Bible to turn ancient superstition and modern ignorance into law.

But I celebrate the fact that for whatever personal and political reasons, our president's support for marriage equality reaffirms his belief that we are not a Christian nation, that in this democracy the Constitution trumps biblical law, and that over the long haul our president will not be held hostage by holy terrorists warning the nation of "God's wrath."

EcoCAR 2: Plugging In to the Future named Mississippi State University, with its series-parallel plug-in hybrid electric vehicle design, the Year One winner at the EcoCAR 2012 Competition in Los Angeles. The 15 universities competing in EcoCAR 2 gathered for six days of judged competition for $100,000 in prize money.

EcoCAR 2?which follows the competition series EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge?is a three-year competition sponsored by the US Department of Energy (DOE), General Motors (GM) and 25 other government and industry leaders to give students the opportunity to gain real-world automotive engineering experience while striving to improve the energy efficiency of a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu.

Year One of the competition series emphasized engineering design though modeling and simulation to select and virtually test their plug-in hybrid electric vehicle architecture. Teams also started developing their hybrid control strategy using hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation tools and designing major vehicle subsystems, including hybrid powertrain, energy storage, and high-voltage electrical systems.

Throughout the competition events in Los Angeles, EcoCAR 2 teams put their designs to the test, giving presentations to industry and government professionals based on their mechanical, electrical, control and HIL strategies, project initiation approval, outreach and business plans, and trade show display.

The Mississippi State University team produced top tier design reports, won Best Facilities Inspection, Best Final Technical Report, Best Project Initiation Approval Presentation, Best Trade Show Evaluation, and Best Controls Presentation categories. The university started competing nine years ago and has since taken first place three times previously.

The second place team is The Ohio State, and University of Waterloo took third place overall.

Now that their vehicle architectures are finalized, the 15 teams also received the keys to the GM-donated 2013 Chevrolet Malibu they will spend the next two years rebuilding, testing and refining.

Memorial Day weather not always a picnic

CLEVELAND - Bratwurst, baked beans and the beach. That's how many of us like to spend our Memorial Day holidays. After all, it?s the unofficial start of summer here in northern Ohio.

But, Memorial Day occurs in May. That's still officially a spring month. So, weather can have wild swings during this time.

This year, high temperatures are forecast to top out in the lower 90s. That's a lot of heat. Highs have hit 90 in the past on this holiday. Memorial Day 1944, 1953 and 1988 each had highs of 90 degrees.

But, this year, if we hit 91 or 92, it would go down as the warmest Memorial Day ever. Akron and Canton's record high temperatures for late May are all in the 92 degree range. So, we will get close to tying for the record warmest Memorial Day this year.

Of course, there have been plenty of cool Memorial Days as well here in Northern Ohio. In 1903, highs reached 53 degrees for the day. Not exactly great beach weather.

In fact, since 1900, high temperatures for this holiday registered 70 degrees or lower almost 50 percent of the time. Highs above 80 degrees occurred only about 25 percent of the time.?

As for precipitation, the wettest Memorial Day in Cleveland history occurred in 1985 when 1.35 inches of rain fell. The good news is measurable rain interrupts Memorial Day outdoor activities only 35 percent of the time! Enjoy your holiday weekend every one.

EU takes action against Argentina at WTO

BRUSSELS (AP) ? The European Union on Friday started legal proceedings at the World Trade Organization against Argentina, claiming the South American country stifles imports to protect its own industry.

The EU, the world's largest trading bloc, said that Argentina's recent move to seize control of a division of Spanish energy company Repsol was indicative of the worsening business climate in the country that has been seeking to limit foreign imports for the past 7 years.

EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht said the situation in Argentina is "clearly getting worse" by the month, leaving him "no choice but to challenge Argentina's protectionist import regime."

And even though the EU started actions on its own, it said its complaints were shared by at least 19 other nations, including the United States, Japan and Australia.

"Europe is not a lone voice, Europe is not the only one," De Gucht said, and urged others to come on board with their own complaints.

"I would certainly welcome any of our trade partners joining our WTO action in coming days and weeks," he said.

The EU alleges that Argentina insists on pre-approval of all imports, systematically delays them and has policies to refuse or limit import amounts.

"Argentina's import restrictions violate international trade rules and must be removed. These measures are causing very real damage," De Gucht told reporters.

The EU trade department said that the Argentine restrictions already affected exports worth some ?500 million ($628 million) last year and that total was rising fast this year. Overall, EU exports to Argentina amounted to ?8.3 billion ($10.4 billion) last year.

Under the WTO rules, the EU and Argentina first will consult each other to settle their differences but if no bilateral deal is reached then, the 27-nation bloc can demand that WTO rules on the legality of Argentina's practices. At the end of a drawn-out process, the WTO can impose potentially crippling fines.

Beyond the current complaints, the EU said it was continuing to monitor the Repsol case for the latest developments.

"It was perhaps the most visible protectionist action by Argentina making headlines across the world but dig a little bit deeper and what you find is that Argentina's trade policy has become rooted in unfair trade practices," De Gucht said.

Repsol last week has sued Argentina over its takeover of the company's majority stake in the YPF oil and gas producer. Repsol and the investment firm Texas Yale Capital Corp. demand that Argentina makes an offer for the stake that Repsol held in YPF. The two want compensation for money lost when shares of Repsol and YPF plummeted after the takeover announced last month.

BRUSSELS (AP) ? European Union leaders concluded their latest summit early Thursday with few concrete steps to fix the continent's festering financial crisis even as the potential for a messy Greek exit from the euro appears to be rising. Some leaders stressed the importance of planning for just such an event but offered no measures that might help Greece avoid it.

Also left unresolved was what Europe should do to spark economic growth and restore the confidence of investors, who have driven some countries' borrowing costs to unsustainable levels. The fiscal austerity agenda that Germany has promoted as the solution to Europe's problem of too much government debt has been met with rising skepticism in other euro countries.

The leaders of the 27 EU countries agreed to give institutions such as the European Investment Bank the task of drawing up proposals for growth in time for another summit in June. But there was discord over more aggressive actions promoted by some leaders heading into the summit, such as issuing bonds jointly as a way of reducing borrowing costs for heavily indebted nations among the 17 countries that use the euro.

The perception that European leaders lack the political will to tackle the continent's financial and economic problems has left markets on edge for weeks. Recession is spreading. Banks are under pressure. The biggest fear is that if Greece cannot be saved, other larger economies ? like Spain or Portugal ? might face the same fate.

The euro countries "have to consider all kinds of events," Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker told reporters after a European Union summit, but insisted that "the working assumption" was that Greece would remain part of the euro. Leaders gathered in Brussels recognized that Greece had endured significant hardships and promised to release development funds aimed at spurring growth.

But the statement from Juncker, who also chairs meetings of eurozone finance ministers, was a frank admission that Greece could wind up abandoning the euro. The country's fringe political parties, which are threatening to renege on commitments made to secure bailout loans, saw their popularity surge in recent elections. No party has been able to form a government, and the country will vote again June 17.

Many analysts have said that Greece, already in its fifth year of recession, has no hope of recovery if it sticks to the spending cuts and tax hikes it agreed to in order to secure bailout loans.

"We want Greece to remain in the euro area," German Chancellor Angela Merkel said after the meeting. "We expect that they will stick to the commitments that they have entered into."

Political uncertainty in Greece is just one of the fires the Europe needs to put out. Leaders are also worried about rising borrowing costs in Spain and Italy that could force them to seek bailouts, just like Greece, Portugal and Ireland did.

Markets had expected the latest EU summit to disappoint and it did. Europe's stock markets had fallen heavily during trading on Wednesday and the euro hit a near two-year low against the dollar.

Asian stock markets retreated Thursday as the lack of a breakthrough in Europe unnerved traders. Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 was down 0.5 at 8,514.53 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng slipped 0.6 percent to 18,682.38.

Dariusz Kowalczyk, senior economist at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong, said Thursday: "Europe is not doing enough, and the market may not wait for them."

One of the biggest questions facing Europe is whether it's time to cut Greece some slack. Some European countries seemed ready to ease the pressure, and international organizations have called for the pace of austerity measures to be slowed in some struggling countries.

But Thursday's summit of 27 European Union leaders ended with no apparent concessions. A final statement said Greece had to respect its commitments and trumpeted the money the eurozone and the International Monetary Fund had loaned Greece as a sign of their "solidarity." It did say that funds for economic development would be sent to Greece ? though it's unclear how much of an immediate impact on growth they would have.

Juncker insisted early Thursday that he had not asked the euro nations to prepare national contingency plans for a possible chaotic departure of Greece from the currency.

French President Francois Hollande said that to evoke the even the possibility was dangerous ? and would send a signal to the markets that the eurozone wasn't standing behind Greece.

The debate reflects the fine line European leaders must walk between pressuring Greece to stick to a program of spending cuts and tax hikes that have exacerbated its economic slowdown and trying to ensure its presence in the eurozone.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy suggested the European Central Bank resume some of its emergency measures, such as buying the bonds of weak countries, which has the impact of lowering countries' borrowing rates. The ECB has suspended the purchases because, as an independent body, it does not want to be seen supporting governments directly. Instead, it has given European banks massive amounts of cheap loans to bolster confidence in the financial system and allow banks to buy up their country's debt.

Leaders on Thursday also addressed the contentious issue of whether the countries that use the euro should spread the risk and borrow money jointly - issuing so-called "eurobonds." This would mean every country could borrow funds at the same rate, substantially lowering the costs for the more indebted countries.

Hollande has pushed for them as an important way to ensure such a crisis never happens again, but Merkel has rejected them, fearing they would reduce the pressure on heavily indebted governments to heal their finances and force Germany to borrow at higher rates.
