Breast Cancer Stories: Me, My Mom and Flo

To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Yahoo News asked women who have had breast cancer or are going through treatment to write about the people in their lives who stood by them and cared for them. Here's one story.

FIRST PERSON | Before I had breast cancer, I was a massage therapist at Mills Health Center in San Mateo, Calif. Many of our clients came from the community. One of my regular clients was Flo, who sought treatment regularly to keep her shoulders loose and manage her stress.

One day, when I went to greet her for her regular session, she told me she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She would receive aggressive treatment -- massage once a week for the duration of her treatments.

I was there through it all. She got through it and got back to her life, and I saw her less frequently. But I was so grateful to have been able to make a difference for her.

The day I got the dreaded call from the radiologist confirming that I had cancer, I ran into Flo. We were driving side by side on El Camino Real, a busy thoroughfare in San Mateo, of all places.

I rolled down the window and shouted the bad news.

She shouted back, "Call me! I'm your buddy!"

She was. I had inflammatory breast cancer. My treatment was aggressive. I started dose-dense chemotherapy on March 3, 2007, 10 days after my ultrasound clued in my radiologist that I "very probably" had cancer. I had eight infusions, two weeks apart. I had all the same drugs Flo had received, plus Herceptin. She took me to my appointments. She brought me Jamba Juice on chemo days and let my call her up and cry. She knew what to say when I told her my veins felt like they were full of Drano. She reassured me that the rotten way I felt was normal, and told me how long it would last and what would help me. Her husband Don also jumped in. They came and took out my daughter and son, ages 7 and 9, so I could rest. Whenever I was on the phone with Flo, Don would shout, "Tell her to remember, this is TEMP-O-RA-RY!"

Flo's partner in crime was my mom, Anne. They conferred together on the phone, about everything from my prognosis (scary, but they didn't tell me) to my boyfriend (wouldn't last; it didn't.). Mom was in Seattle. She relied on Flo to know how I was doing, and when Mom came to help when I had surgery, she and Flo were already fast friends.

Flo and I drifted back into our own very different lives after the journey, as she told me we would. We drop each other a line every so often. My gratitude to her is beyond words. I couldn't have done it without her.

DHR News ? Frederick County DSS Holiday Gift Project at Social ...

Cold weather and the holidays are right around the corner.? Once again, the Frederick County Department of Social Services is sponsoring their annual 2012 Holiday Gift Project to make the season special for some of some of our neighbors in need.

There are many seniors, families, and children who would not be able to celebrate the holidays without the assistance of their neighbors and community.? Many offices, groups, families, and individuals have volunteered to help spread holiday joy by participating in this program.? Last year over 367 children and families, 78 home bound senior citizens, and numerous nursing home residents were able to enjoy the holidays thanks to generous donations from our donors and sponsors.

Those who volunteer to sponsor are provided an information sheet about the family or person(s) they are helping.? Then gifts are purchased, wrapped, and brought to the Department.? Workers will then distribute the presents to their clients.? All donations are greatly appreciated.

The Frederick County DSS Holiday Gift Project not only warms the hearts of those in need, but the hearts of those who donate as well.? If you, your family, or group would like to participate by providing presents, please contact Jennifer Long at Social Services via e-mail at ??jlong@dhr.state.md.us or by calling (301) 600-4544.

The Philosophy Behind Windows 8, From One of Its Creators

Microsoft will officially release Windows 8 to the public on Friday, and although company executives would never say so, they must be at least a little bit nervous about it. After all, the user interface (formerly known as Metro) is the most radical redesign of the operating system since Windows 95.

[More from Mashable: The History of Windows in Startup Sounds]

The risk, of course, is that customers will respond with confusion, or worse: outright terror. The new Start screen looks entirely different from the traditional desktop (though that interface still exists), with floating, blocky tiles instead of files and folders. And it's almost entirely chrome-less -- even basic things like the battery indicator and clock are hidden from view until you touch a button or the screen.

Believe it or not, Microsoft doesn't delight in freaking out its customers, and there is a reason it went with an interface that's so different and mind-bogglingly Spartan. This is Windows designed for the connected user, from the ground up.

[More from Mashable: Surface Is a Tablet Windows Users Will Love [REVIEW]]

"We started looking at big trends in the industry and asked, 'How does Windows fit in?'" says Sam Moreau, director of design and research for Windows. "Most of the Windows metaphors -- the desktop, the taskbar, the control panels, the start menu -- all those things were invented in the Windows 95 era. Windows 95 didn't even have a browser."

As computing evolved over the last two decades, the Internet and shared media played a larger and larger role, elevating the browser from a mere app to the centerpiece of the connected experience. However, the system it was running on stayed stubbornly the same.

"All the things since then that you care about -- like a browser, like an MP3 file, the PC as a communications device --- none of those things were native to the UI of windows," Moreau points out. "An application created a file, and you could put a file in a folder. That was basically what the operating system did."

SEE ALSO: Bill Gates Speaks Out About Windows 8 [VIDEO]

Microsoft set out to modernize the PC experience with Windows 8. Instead of static icons, apps now have animated "live tiles" on the Start screen that serve up fresh information at regular intervals. It's a far cry from when the only thing connected to the Internet in a dynamic way was the browser.

"There's tons of stuff on the Internet," says Moreau, "And your PC basically has this little straw -- Internet Explorer -- to see all this. We didn't think that should be the case. The whole PC should be about that. Part of what the Start screen is really about is making all this activity -- these people that you care about, and all this information -- sort of explode so you're immersed in it."

That immersion comes at a cost, however, and there are few clear signposts on how to do things, such as how to call up your tabs, change your PC setting, or just shut the darn thing off. Moreau explains why Microsoft would choose to leave new users with few visual clues about the capabilities of the UI.

"We have a design philosophy, and one of the aspects of it is putting the information that you care about at your fingertips. Everything else we want to recede. It should be the best presentation of the thing the person cares about. It's their photos -- it's not wrapping it in big buttons that say it's a photo. You don't need that," he says.

"[Visual cues] are good for one-time discoverability. But then that's always there -- it's kind of always barking at you, in your periphery, that [the UI] can do these things."

What do you think of user interface design in Windows 8, and the philosophy behind it? Share your thoughts in the comments.

The Windows 8 Release Preview has many more dynamic live tiles, with new apps like News, Sports and Travel adding images and headlines to the mix.

Video Game News & Reviews - GAMEBREAKER.TV All Your ...

Addon creator Nyctrennis has gone ahead and created what everyone has been thinking since World of Warcraft introduced the pet battle feature in Mists of Pandaria. Wok?mon takes the standard pet battle interface and transforms it into the Game Boy version of retro classic, Pok?mon.

While the appearance of this old-school interface is a tad incongruous in the relatively slick three-dimensional world created by Blizzard, it?s definitely a great addition to the addon world, a great bit of retro flavor for one of the most popular new features in the game.

Installation is simple, following the standard procedure of downloading the addon, extracting the zip file, and placing the folders therein into the Addons section of your World of Warcraft interface folder. Once you?ve completed those steps, simply log in to the game, find a pet to battle by looking out for the green pawprint over their head, and right-click the pet to bring up the battle interface. If you don?t see any pets with the green paw icon over their head, it?s likely that you haven?t yet trained pet battles, so head to Stormwind or Orgrimmar to visit the trainers.

Once you start your first pet battle, you?ll be flung headfirst into the Wowk?mon tutorial. The first notable thing is that the tutorial is given by Professor Birch, rather than Oak, but aside from that the authenticity of the interface is impressive. The author has gone to great lengths to preserve the original look, while integrating features like tooltips and such into the addon. It?s definitely advisable to pick a pet you?re not concerned about capturing, as unless you win the battle, the tutorial won?t complete, and will restart on your next battle.

The unitframes you see for your pet and the opposing pet can be moved with your mouse, but interact so can?t be moved independently of one another, but it?s straightforward to get them to reasonable positions. Once you?re happy with that set-up you can proceed to use the interface, as pictured above. All the commands are included, under Fight is the sub-menu for all your abilities, Bag is the same as trap, and so on. Generally, the standard WoW interface can be revealed by holding down shift and mouseing over the relevant button. Some of the commands are a little counter-intuitive, so it?s really important to pay close attention to the tutorial.

The addon creator has gone to a huge amount of trouble to make this addon function within the bounds of WoW, yet provide a Pok?mon-esque experience. Little features like the bag and the pre-fight splash screen, which shows your character in a different outfit with a different tagline each time you battle, really add to the experience. At the time of testing, the addon wasn?t fantastically compatible with other addons, pet battle addons and even others like UI replacements, but a great experience nonetheless.

Full Marriage Equality: Parents and Expectant Parents Discuss ...

Discussions pop up everywhere about topics like polyamory and open relationships. (As a reminder, "open relationships" and "polyamory" are not synonyms.) Discussions tend to help, as the more people talk, the more we see there is a diversity of needs when it comes to relationships and sexuality, and that polyamorous people or people in open relationships are not bad people or people nobody knows. They are quite often great people, gay, lesbian, bisexual, or heterosexual, who live next door in harmony with monogamists. An example is this poll and discussion at baby-gaga.com initiated by Abbey & Ethan. Here are some highlights...

That's what I have always wanted but DH doesn't agree. Yeah. I didn't put much thought into that part of things when I decided to marry DH.

I've always been a very monogamous person and I don't think I could actually be in a relationship with another person.

However, lately I've been wondering about other things, like threesomes. I love my husband but I miss sleeping with women. I can live without dating and being in a relationship with a woman, my husband is quite fulfilling in that, but I miss the sex. I'm afraid it would somehow harm our relationship, though.

For the people I know, it's often just sex. But there are a lot of instances where the intimacy level is brought to it's max (a max often beyond that of a monogamous relationship) with certain practices.
Mama to William + 1 added...
DH would be fine with it, it's me that has reservations. I'm not afraid that I'll become emotionally attached to the woman, it's more that I like the way my relationship is with DH and I'm afraid that having sex with someone else would alter it in a negative way.

My sexuality is a little complicated. I'm not bisexual - I don't like men enough for me to feel like the term applies. I love my husband, but beyond that I have no interest in men at all. Besides for him everyone that I've ever dated, smurfed, been attracted to, etc. has been female.

Asked why she married a man, she replied...
I don't know. He was my best friend and I fell in love with him. We started dating and I made it very clear at the beginning that I made no promises because at the time I wasn't sure if I'd be happy to have sex with him. But it worked out wonderfully and we seem happier than most couples I know. I'm by no means unhappy with him now, even though I can't explain why he was/is such a major exception, but sometimes I miss the sex.

It is a weird thing and it's pretty impossible to explain, but it is what it is.

One*day*at*a*time...
I don't think I could do it. I would feel left out and cheated out of part of him (DH). I want 100% of him. I give him 100% of me so I expect that back. Now could we share a woman in our relationship? Yes and we have before but it was mutual, shared and never on our own. She was a part of "our" relationship not something separate on the side On a side note though DH could never share me with another man (he's told me) so it's kind of a double standard. Although it doesn't bother me because I have no desire to be with another man. Even if he was involved. I can't really say for sure that I would involve another woman again. Even though it worked before and was mostly about sex it just seems like trying again with someone else may be pressing our luck. It might not work out so well with another woman. It ended because she met someone else and is now engaged. I think part of why it worked is because her and I had been best friends since 3rd grade, when she met DH we all became friends. She never hit on him and he never did her. We were just friends. then we got adventurous.
These are not "other" people. These are the people you live next to, work with, and are probably in your family. These people especially are the people you see pushing baby carriages. Isn't it ridiculous to perpetuate stigmas and discrimination against people who aren't monogamous?

Hormone therapy not recommended for disease prevention: U.S. panel

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The risks of taking hormone therapy to prevent heart disease and osteoporosis in post menopausal women far outweigh the benefits and such treatment is not recommended, according to new guidelines from an influential panel of U.S. health advisers.

The guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, published on Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine, reaffirm the group's 2005 guidelines recommending against the treatment.

They apply only to hormone therapy for prevention of chronic disease. They do not apply to the use of hormones to treat symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes or vaginal dryness, or to women under age 50 who have had a hysterectomy.

"Our recommendation is the same as it was for 2005," said Dr. Kirstin Bibbins-Domingo, a researcher and internist at the University of California San Francisco and a member of the task force.

"In evaluating the evidence for both the benefits and the harms of these therapies, the task force recommends against these therapies for the purpose of preventing chronic conditions," she said in a telephone interview.

The guidelines are based on a review of the most recent scientific evidence, which showed that estrogen alone and estrogen plus progestin reduce the risk of bone fractures, but increase the risk for stroke, blood clots, gallbladder disease and incontinence.

While taking estrogen alone reduced the risk for breast cancer, estrogen plus progestin increased the risk for dementia and breast cancer.

Doctors say the guidelines largely reflect current medical practice, and are not likely to stir controversy, unlike some of the task force's previous recommendations on the use of screening tests for breast cancer and prostate cancer.

The recommendations address the belief that giving older women hormone replacement therapy might prevent some age-related diseases, such has heart disease and dementia.

But the largest trial to look at the practice, called the Women's Health Initiative study, in 2002 found that women who took estrogen plus progestin for five years had higher rates of ovarian cancer, breast cancer, strokes and other health problems.

That study sharply cut sales of popular hormone treatments such as Premarin and Prempro, previously sold by Wyeth and now owned by Pfizer Inc.

'THRESHOLD FOR SAFETY'

"When it comes to preventing disease in otherwise healthy women, the threshold for safety is high," Bibbins-Domingo said.

"In this case, the harms - the risk of blood clots, gallbladder disease, those types of things - led us to conclude that, on balance, the harms outweigh any potential benefit."

She added that for conditions such like heart disease and dementia, there was no evidence of any benefit.

Dr. JoAnn Manson, chief of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and a professor at Harvard Medical School who worked on the WHI study, said the latest recommendations track with current medical practice.

"Most professional societies already advise against the use of hormone therapy for chronic disease prevention," Manson, who is not on the task force, said in a telephone interview.

These groups include the American Heart Association, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Manson said it is important to distinguish between hormone therapy used for prevention of chronic disease and short-term use of hormone therapy to treat menopause symptoms, which the guidelines do not address.

She said many of the same professional societies that caution against use of hormone therapy for prevention endorse its use in healthy women whose lives are being disrupted by symptoms of menopause.

"That is the really key point here," she said.

Because of the potential risks, doctors prescribe hormone therapy for menopause symptoms at the lowest possible dose for the shortest period of time.

"We understand that there is a different balance of benefits and risks when hormone therapy is used for short-term symptom management versus long-term disease prevention," Manson said.

"Unless a woman has moderate to severe hot flashes and menopausal symptoms and is going to derive a quality-of-life benefit, it is likely that the risk of hormone therapy will outweigh the benefits."

Because the average age of women in the Women's Health Initiative study was 64, some doctors question whether the risks of harm apply to younger women taking hormone therapy for menopause symptoms.

The task force said more study is needed on the effects of hormone therapy in younger women.

Featuring the best in contemporary African film, Africa in Motion (AiM) returns for its 7th consecutive year to Filmhouse Cinema, Edinburgh, and launches this year for the first time at the Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT).

Taking the very timely theme of ?Modern Africa?, and arriving hot on the heels of Damon Albarn?s Africa Express UK music tour, the festival?s diverse, continent-spanning programme of documentary and fictional films (totalling 20 UK premieres, 23 features and 32 shorts) will explore African urban and rural experiences, identity and popular culture, contemporary politics and social issues, Africa?s rich heritage and its exciting future.

Director of AiM Isabel Moura Mendes says, ?We are both thrilled and extremely proud of the strong programme of films and events we are bringing to our audiences this year. Our wide and diverse contemporary Africa-focused programme will entertain, inform, surprise and move people. Above all, audiences will be offered the opportunity to engage with the best of African cinema. It will be a true celebration of African creativity and, once again, one not to be missed!?

The festival programme opens on Wednesday 25 October (in Glasgow, Sunday 28 October) with the UK premiere of Uhlanga (The Mark), the story of three teenagers struggling against poverty and prejudice written and directed by celebrated South African author and playwright Ndaba ka Ngwane, who will be in attendance. The programme closes on Friday 2 November (Glasgow, Wednesday 31 October) with Nigerian- born director Andrew Dosunmu?s Restless City, the story of a young African immigrant living and falling in love on the fringes of New York City.

The programme takes in five strands: African Science Fiction, Arab Spring Documentaries, Nollywood (Nigeria?s film industry, the second largest in the world), Modern African Identities and African Popular Arts. Not just for kids: The most romantic Disney vacations offer grown-ups a place to play

2 hrs.

On a recent vacation, business manager Lauren O?Donnell?s boyfriend set the mood with a private boat ride. Fireworks lit up the sky, and he popped the question?at Disney World.

?I texted my friend to let him know I?m engaged,? says O?Donnell, who works at American Express Publishing, ?and learned he went to Disney for his one-year anniversary last year.?

Slideshow: See where the most romantic Disney vacations are

Grown-ups like to play at the Happiest Place on Earth, too, and romance has become big business for Disney. Over the past two decades, Disney World alone has hosted more than 45,000 weddings, and countless couples have vacationed at the company?s properties across the U.S.

?I think that Disney has this intangible magic that envelops people, if they allow it to,? says Deb Wills, whose Disney news and travel-planning site AllEars.net has a devoted following of 145,000 weekly subscribers. ?You can shut out the real world; you can suspend reality.?

But disappearing into that kind of theme-park love cocoon isn't always easy.

?Disney is Disney,? says Wills. ?There are lots and lots of families.? So start by going where the children aren't, such as a resort hotel during the daytime, when most guests are on the park rides. Or a cruise ship like the?Disney Wonder?and?Disney Magic,?on which couples? spa treatment rooms pair a massage with champagne on a veranda with sea views.

Inside the theme parks, privacy is catch-as-catch-can on little-walked trails and quiet culs-de-sac (ahem, try wandering to the back of Paradise Pier at California Adventure).

For a more guaranteed dose of romance, book a table at Be Our Guest restaurant, opening in?November at the newly expanded Fantasyland. It?s the first Magic Kingdom restaurant ever to serve wine and beer with dinner, and the d?cor is also creating buzz: a domed dining room with views of falling ?snow? that echo the ballroom scene from "Beauty and the Beast."

We've rounded up more couple-friendly Disney activities, each different in mood and expense. If you aren't swooning by the end, you may be better off at Six Flags.

A plat?form doesn?t have to be scary; it?s just a means to an?end

?

It?s safe to say that your mom thinks you?re really some?thing spe?cial. If you?re lucky, so does your part?ner and maybe, if they?re under 12, so do your kids.? But when it comes to sell?ing your book to a pub?lisher ? or to the world ? your imme?di?ate cir?cle of friends and fam?ily doesn?t count much.? Even if they all have told you that you should write a book, they could be?wrong.

In pub?lish?ing, two things mat?ter: your plat?form (that is, how many com?plete strangers think you?re cool, smart, knowl?edge?able or oth?er?wise worth lis?ten?ing to) and your con?tent. In that?order.

A great idea + no plat?form = no sold?books.

A great plat?form + a decent idea = con?tract with a publisher.

If you?re hav?ing trou?ble GETTING that con?tract with a pub?lisher, don?t waste your time pur?su?ing another hand?ful of agents.? Don?t rush out to self-publish, because if no one wants your book now, no one is going to want it just because you?ve self-published. (There are few mercy sales in the?world!)

Stop for a minute.? Be log?i?cal.? Real?ize that grow?ing your fan base, your plat?form, the group of peo?ple who want to know what you know so that their own lives can be bet?ter, MUST be done.? Before you pub?lish or even self-publish.

Here?s a free tip:? start a Pub?lic Fig?ure page on Face?book.? Really. Even if the term ?pub?lic fig?ure? seems grandiose.? Wanna know what a good one should look like?? Type in the names of a few of your favorite authors.? Do that. Copy them.? You gotta start some?where, why not here? It?s free.? You can learn if the world REALLY want what you have to say by say?ing it in sound bytes to the world via Facebook.

While your mom may be right that you?re not only smart but also cute as a bug?s ear, you?ll sell more books and impress more pub?lish?ing pro?fes?sion?als if you show up with thou?sands of Face?book fans in?tow.

NEW ORLEANS More pediatric hospital physicians are communicating through cell phone text messaging, rather than the traditional pager method, according to research presented Oct. 21 at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans.

Since the early 1980s, physicians traditionally have relied on pagers to contact other physicians, residents, nurses and hospital staff. However, with the surge in cellphone use and the fact that many cellphones now accept pages many physicians and staff are sending text messages with questions and requests for assistance.

In the study, "Text Messaging as a Means of Communication among Pediatric Hospitalists," researchers administered an electronic survey to 106 pediatric hospital physicians. The majority of the physicians surveyed were female (68 percent) and had been in practice less than 10 years (62 percent). Ninety percent of responders regularly used a smartphone and 96 percent used text messaging.

The most frequent method of communication in the hospital setting was verbal face-to-face communication (92 percent) and telephone conversation (92 percent). However, more than half of the physicians interviewed (57 percent) reported either sending or receiving work-related text messages, of whom 12 percent reported sending more than 10 messages per shift. Nearly half (49 percent) also reported receiving work-related text messages when not scheduled to be on call. Most often these text messages were to or from other pediatric hospitalists (59 percent), fellows or resident physicians (34 percent), or subspecialists and consulting physicians (25 percent).

Forty-one percent of respondents reportedly received text messages on a personal phone, and 18 percent to a hospital-assigned phone. Twenty-seven percent said they preferred texting for brief communications; 23 percent preferred a hospital assigned pager; and 21 percent preferred verbal face-to-face communication.

Few physicians reported that their hospital had a policy for texting or Health Insurance Portability and Protection Act (HIPPA)-encrypted software for texting.

"We are using text messaging more and more to communicate with other physicians, residents and even to transfer a patient to a different unit," said abstract author Stephanie Kuhlmann, MD. "We've had such a rapid increase in cellphone use, and I'm not sure that hospitals have caught up by putting in place related processes and protocols."

We also need to look at life balance," said Dr. Kuhlman. "It's not easy to leave your cellphone when you're not at work. People still can contact you."

(AP) ? Florida went 0-for-October last season, with humbling losses to Alabama, LSU, Auburn and Georgia.

It bothered coaches and players for a year.

It motivated them, too.

A year later, the Gators have a chance to end the month with a division title.

"I like this better," coach Will Muschamp said. "So does everybody else."

Jeff Driskel threw four touchdown passes ? three of them after turnovers ? and the third-ranked Gators matched their win total from 2011 with a 44-11 drubbing of No. 9 South Carolina on Saturday.

The Gators avenged consecutive losses to the Gamecocks, including one a couple of years ago that ended with Steve Spurrier and his players celebrating a division title in The Swamp.

"We remember the feeling, how bad it hurt," center Jon Harrison said. "We even had guys getting emotional over it. We just used that as pure motivation to come out here and completely dominate this team."

Florida's latest whatever-it-takes win kept Muschamp's team undefeated and put it on the cusp of the Southeastern Conference's Eastern Division title. The Gators (7-0, 6-0 SEC) can clinch a spot in the league's championship game by beating No. 13 Georgia next week in nearby Jacksonville.

Florida won this one with turnovers, stellar defense and more halftime adjustments ? the kind of successful tweaks that are making Muschamp and his staff seem like the right fit in Gainesville.

The Gators finished 7-6 last season, barely avoiding the program's first losing season since 1979. The struggles had outsiders questioning whether Muschamp could get Florida back to national prominence.

He's got the team there now ? even if it hasn't always been pretty.

The Gators managed just 29 yards and two first downs in the first half against South Carolina (6-2, 4-2). But they led 21-6 thanks to three turnovers.

Loucheiz Purifoy knocked the ball out of Connor Shaw's hands on the first play. Lerentee McCray recovered, giving Florida the ball at the 2-yard line. Driskel hooked up with Jordan Reed on third down, putting the Gators up early.

It also was a sign of things to come for the Gamecocks, who had trouble holding onto the ball all afternoon.

Ace Sanders fumbled on a punt return that led to Driskel's second TD pass. He found Quinton Dunbar for a 13-yard score. Dunbar spun out of DeVonte Holloman's grasp before coasting across the goal line.

On the ensuing kickoff, Solomon Patton forced Damiere Byrd to fumble. Chris Johnson picked it up and nearly scored. He was stopped at the 1, setting up Driskel's third TD pass to Reed. Driskel faked a handoff and found Reed alone in the back of the end zone, which made it 21-3.

"I'd rather have 1 yard in front of me than 75," Driskel said.

South Carolina failed to generate much offense. In fact, the Gamecocks managed two field goal in the first half thanks to penalties and returned a blocked extra point for two points in the third quarter.

Shaw completed 9 of 20 passes for 72 yards. He was benched in the second half, replaced by Dylan Thompson. Thompson completed 8 of 20 passes for 83 yards, with an interception.

"Coach Spurrier told me at halftime we were going to make the change," Shaw said. "He told me I wasn't getting the job done. I was completely supportive of him. Bottom line today, we just didn't execute."

The Gators put the game away by scoring on all three possessions in the third quarter, getting a 6-yard TD run by Omarius Hines, a field goal and a 6-yard pass from Driskel to Frankie Hammond Jr.

They made South Carolina's defensive front, which dominated in the first half, look suspect. They also better controlled standout end pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney, who gave them fits early. And they kept South Carolina off balance with creative play-calling that included tight end Trey Burton in the wildcat.

"It was embarrassing for us, very embarrassing to lose," Spurrier said. "We've got to reevaluate a lot of our personnel and get players out there who really want to play for South Carolina. Two weeks ago, I wouldn't have thought this. We had a bad one today. LSU was bad (last week). This one was worse. We've got to regroup somehow."

Driskel completed 11 of 16 passes for 93 yards. Mike Gillislee ran 19 times for 37 yards. Reed caught four passes for 44 yards.

Florida's defense and special teams were much more impressive.

The Gators held South Carolina to 191 yards, including minus-1 in the third quarter. Marcus Lattimore, who didn't start because of a hip injury, ran just three times for 13 yards. And Florida dominated every aspect of special teams. In addition to the two forced fumbles, Kyle Christy had seven punts of at least 50 yards.

"We're on our way to being what Florida used to be, what Florida's known for," Harrison said. "We hope to accomplish that this season."

Pregnant NYC woman stabbed to death ahead of wedding - The ...

A New York City woman that was eight months pregnant and was set to get married Sunday was found dead in her apartment, police and witnesses say.

Vindalee Smith, 38, was due to deliver a baby boy in two weeks and was stabbed to death in the neck, a source told the New York Post.

Authorities found Smith in her East Flatbush apartment around 9:30 a.m. It was unclear how long she was dead before she was found, but her baby did not survive, the Associated Press reports.

Smith has two teenage boys ? who lived with family friends ? and two girls in their twenties.?

A friend told the New York Post that Monique, Smith?s oldest daughter, fell to the ground crying after arriving at the home.

?It was so sad. She came for a baby shower and a wedding ? but now she has to stay for a funeral,? the friend said.

The baby shower was expected to take place Saturday night followed by the wedding on Sunday morning, CBS New York reports.

Police are still searching for a motive and suspects in the case. But a pastor at the New Dimension Church, where Smith was to get married, told the New York Post that she had received death threats in the past from a former neighbor whom she had an ongoing ?misunderstanding? with.

She worked at a home health-care agency for the elderly, the newspaper added.
