Distinguished Sex, Porn and Relationship Addiction Experts Robert ...

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) June 20, 2012

Elements Behavioral Health invites mental health and addiction professionals to a daylong training on the assessment and treatment of sexual addiction. Sexual Addiction: Effective Assessment, Diagnosis and Treatment takes place on July 13, 2012, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Double Tree Hotel in Minneapolis.

Professionals will be invited to join internationally known sexual addiction specialists Robert Weiss, LCSW, CSAT-S, and Stefanie Carnes, PhD, CSAT-S, for an in-depth course on sexual addiction, Internet porn and the evolution of sex/tech and their relationship to adult problems with mental health, addiction, intimacy and adult sexuality. The workshop will offer clear insight into the proposed DSM-5 diagnosis of Hypersexual Disorder, with insight into the behavioral or process addictions as related to sexual addiction treatment. The speakers will encourage open discussion of the questions most often asked by professionals and the media related to the treatment of sexual addicts, as well as their spouses and partners.

Sexual addiction as a diagnosis is often misunderstood, even ridiculed and/or misappropriated, sometimes by well-meaning, but undertrained clinicians, said Mr. Weiss. This daylong event focused on the basics of sexual addiction diagnosis and treatment will help clinicians more effectively work with problem sexual behavior as well as the resulting chaos of broken spousal and family relationships.

Some of specific training objectives include:

1. Define sexual pathology from healthy sex with a full review of the characteristic symptoms of sexual addiction in both men and women.

2. Outline the origins of sex and relationship addictions.

3. Discuss the emotional trauma of the betrayed addicted spouse along with possible coping

strategies at disclosure/discovery.

4. Provide referral resources and information, including self-help groups, review of the 12-Step programs, online resources, and useful articles and books.

5. Identify therapeutic strategies toward helping those family members affected by sexual addiction in a loved one.

Robert Weiss founded The Sexual Recovery Institute: Los Angeles in 1995. A UCLA MSW, he is now Director of Sexual Disorders Services for Elements Behavioral Health and the creator of The Center for Relationship and Sexual Recovery at The Ranch in Tennessee. Author of three books on sexual addiction, Mr. Weiss is a media expert to CNN, The Oprah Winfrey Network, ESPN, The New York Times, The Times of London and the Today Show, among others, Mr. Weiss also has provided clinical training and program development for the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. military and behavioral treatment centers throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.

Dr. Stefanie Carnes, PhD, CSAT-S, became president of The International Institute of Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP) in November 2010. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist, author, AAMFT approved supervisor and a regular speaker at national mental health and addiction conferences. Dr. Carnes expertise is in working with the spouses and families affected by multiple addictions, such as sexual addiction, eating disorders and chemical dependency. Dr. Carnes is also a certified sex addiction therapist and supervisor, specializing in therapy for couples and families struggling with sexual addiction.

Registration for the workshop costs $ 75 ($ 85 for those registering after July 6). Lunch is included, and attendees may earn six CEUs. To attend, visit the Elements Behavioral Health events page or contact Jeanette Lisalda at (866) 825-1104 or jlisalda(at)theelements(dot)com.
