Self Improvement | Little Rescuer: Taking A Nudge Toward ...

By Michael K Keith -

?How do I help you??, my son asked me.

?You help me all the time.?

?No, no, no? I mean, I?m not a super hero. I don?t have a cape. I can?t fly and save strangers.?

?You don?t need super powers to help people.?

?I only have a vampire cape. I don?t like vampires.?

?You help people by being good to them. You help them by giving them the chance to help you.?

?Like Gru in Despicble Me. The orphans turned him good because they needed him.?

?Yes, just like Gru. You make me want to be the best person I can be. You save me everyday.?

He smiles, ?Super Michael to the rescue!?

?Yes, Super Michael to the rescue. Now go to sleep.?

I remember a moment when my son was just newborn. I held him in the crook of my arm while he slept. The house was silent, it was a bright day outside. He was wearing a blue and red fireman jump suit with a badge that said, ?Little Rescuer?. I realized right there that he was going to save me from myself. This has only become clearer ever since. It sounds like a lot of pressure for a baby but it?s what kids just do. He?s been working on me since day one.

If you are willing to help, people who need you make you forget yourself. If you are giving unconditionally you are letting go of your own needs, seeing through your busy mind, dropping your ego. And getting past yourself is the key to happiness.

This works well with kids because you really don?t have a choice. Folks who abandon themselves to god are afforded the same chance. To be happy, you sometimes have to be given no choice in the matter! It saves you the trouble of a lifetime trying to wrestle your ego to the ground.

We assume that meeting our own wants is the key to being happy. The opposite is true. This is so counter to our thinking, to our culture it?s a life challenge to accept let alone act upon. Yet true happiness comes from forgetting yourself and focusing instead on the happiness of others. Conversely, giving others the opportunity to help you can increase their happiness. The ancient words are true; it really is better to give than receive. But you should also offer others the same opportunity. So by giving you are taking and by taking you are giving? and the more you give, the more you get.

For the magic to work, to open a world of happiness, you must be open and being open is about getting past yourself.

Sometimes you just need a little help, or a little helper, to get started.
